New Study at U of C
New study to explore social and emotional abilities of adolescents with autism

People often assume that adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) will have trouble getting a job or developing personal relationships because of their social awkwardness. In fact, we don’t yet have a clear understanding about the social and emotional abilities of teens and young adults with ASD.

In one of the largest studies of its kind to be conducted in Canada, researchers from the U of C’s Faculty of Education will collect and analyse information from approximately 100 adolescents and young adults aged 17-21 who have been diagnosed with an ASD, such as Asperger Syndrome or high-functioning autism.

An estimated one in 165 Canadians are affected by an ASD, a neuro-developmental condition that can cause people with it to miss social cues, fixate on certain topics or misunderstand other people’s emotions.

The U of C research team, in partnership with the universities of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, hopes to learn more about the social and emotional strengths as well as the challenges of youth with ASD to identify how to help them make a successful transition to adulthood. The group is seeking participants for the research study. Those interested in participating can contact (403) 220-3642 or asdgroup@ucalgary.ca
